Parents As Teachers
This
early childhood program empowers
parents to give their child age prenatal-3 the best possible
start
in life. A certified parent educator visits families monthly in their home
to focus on the typical development
of each child. Age-appropriate
activities, language, bonding,
and motor, emotional and social development are
discussed in each visit. PAT educators
involve parents and children in a
new activity
each visit that stimulates learning and growth. Each activity
is specifically planned for the
child’s age. Handouts about the activity
and
other ways to encourage the child’s development are provided.
Educators
discuss concerns
and
answer questions in a supportive and empowering relationship with the parents.
They also help connect parents to other community resources.
PAT parents can take advantage of
the Baby Buck$
program by earning coupons for a wide range of activities. Coupons
can be redeemed for clothing, infant items, toys and books in the Baby Buck$
Store.

Parents As Teachers families enjoy making story props for
the book "Five Little Monkeys" at group
meetings in Statesville and Mooresville While parents read the rhyming story,
children "jumped"
the monkeys off the bed one at a time. This literacy building experience will
be repeated often
since books and the story prop went home with each family.
Play to Learn Groups
Learning through play, children interact with other children and their parents
in weekly, one-hour groups at Smart Start playrooms. Play groups build
social, physical, emotional and intellectual skills that help prepare children
for school. Activities and information target all aspects of child
development. An annual enrollment fee of $20 is charged for Iredell County
residents and $40 for out-of-county residents. Play groups are available
in Statesville and Mooresville.
